Art by Obi Kaufmann
The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books is back on-site this year, and we're kicking off the festivities with an evening featuring Heyday authors, conversations, and community.
We will hear from Greg Sarris, author most recently of Becoming Story and longtime Chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, as well as artist-adventurer Obi Kaufmann, whose Coasts of California is going to be available for the first time at our event. Together we will celebrate 35 years of News from Native California, the quarterly magazine published by Heyday since 1987.

Becoming Story
Greg Sarris
Becoming Story is a master class in the art of belonging to the place where you live. What does it mean to be truly connected to home—to walk where innumerable generations of your ancestors have walked? And what does it mean when you dedicate your life to making that connection even deeper? Moving between his childhood and the present day, Sarris creates a kaleidoscopic narrative about the forces that shaped his early years and his eventual work as a tribal leader. Publishing on April 5.
The Coasts of California
Obi Kaufmann
The Coasts of California explores the rhythms of the tides, the lives of sea creatures, the shifting of rocks and sand, and the special habitats found where the land meets the ocean. From the artist-adventurer behind The Forests of California and The California Field Atlas, this shoreline odyssey traces the California Coastal Trail in exquisite watercolors and pure poetic reverie, fusing science and art throughout. Publishing on April 19.
