Join us for the 17th annual Heyday Harvest, honoring Joan Baez for Lifetime Achievement and Jean Pfaelzer, author of California, A Slave State, with the Heyday History Award.
This year's Harvest invites you to explore the world through the eyes of Heyday's authors and honorees.
Walk the changing California coastline with Los Angeles Times environmental reporter and Pulitzer finalist Rosanna Xia. Cook a delicious Indigenous dish (and learn the stories behind it) with Sara Calvosa Olson in her California kitchen, and peek inside Obi Kaufmann's studio.
Plus, revelatory conversations about justice, art, and life with the legendary Joan Baez and internationally acclaimed historian Jean Pfaelzer.
If you can’t make the broadcast on October 26, a replay will be available.
A cultural and activist force of nature since she burst onto the musical scene at age 18 at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival, longtime Californian Joan Baez is one of the most influential, iconic, and timeless singer/songwriters of the century. A self-described "non-violent soldier," she was one of the first American musicians to use her massive popularity and vocal talent as vehicles for awareness and change, advocating tirelessly for civil and human rights and against war. Her unforgettable songs--from "Where are You Now, My Son?" to "Diamonds and Rust"--form the soundtrack of an American era, one indelibly shaped by her own commitment to fighting for justice and peace. The founder of Humanitas International Human Rights Committee and the recipient of the American Civil Liberties Union's Earl Warren Award, she has released more than 30 albums and published four books, including a memoir, a collection of poems, and her latest, 2022's Am I Pretty When I Fly?: An Album of Upside Down Drawings. She lives in Woodside, California. Learn more here.
Jean Pfaelzer's California, A Slave State (Yale University Press, 2023) is a bombshell uncovering of the Golden State's shocking and neglected history, and a contemporary reckoning with how it continues today. The Los Angeles Times called it "a devastatingly detailed, urgent and somewhat regretful confirmation of an inconvenient truth: Far from being the place where everyone got an equal chance, California embraced slavery from the outset and used it to become the most prosperous state in the union." An internationally recognized scholar and public intellectual, Pfaelzer has a track record of unearthing buried revelations (in 2007 she exposed a history of ethnic cleansing with Driven Out: The Forgotten War Against Chinese Americans). With California, A Slave State, she chronicles inequities from the indentured servitude of Indigenous people to the exploitation of immigrants to the establishment of the state penitentiary in San Quentin. But to this lifelong Californian, there is hope and optimism to be found in the stories of resistance and ingenious human resilience she uncovered in her research: a spirit that continues to fuel the fight for justice in California.
